Antique Hand Grinders! - The Weekly Grind 2017

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Weekly Grind! Just FYI, we’re open our usual hours today and Saturday, but we are CLOSED Monday September 4 for Labor Day. Hope you enjoy your day off as well if you have it!

Also, best of luck to our Armeno college freshmen, Carey and Abby, as they start this brand new adventure! Hope all you college kids moving in, or parents dropping off your students, had a safe and smooth-going start to your year!

Armeno Antiques!

Chuck recently came across these old gems while antiquing. Though they only serve a decorative purpose here at the mill, apparently there actually is some potential benefit to grinding your beans by hand. Grinding this way is slower, but that also means less friction, and therefore less heat, is produced during the grinding process, leaving the flavor of the beans a bit more intact. Not going to lie though, it’ll take more than a cool exterior to get us to ditch our top-of-the-line, super speedy, Mahlokonig grinder (which we affectionately refer to as ‘Darth Vader’).

This Week’s Toasty Tidbit:

Did you know coffee grounds are great for gardening? They make excellent fertilizer for certain plants, can turn your next round of hydrangeas blue, keep pests like slugs and snails away from your garden, attract helpful critters like worms, and add some great nitrogen to your compost pile! In fact there are all sorts of uses for coffee grounds, from exfoliator, to deodorizing your fridge, to keeping your sidewalks less icy in the winter! You’ll never have to worry about hanging onto your ground coffee too long again!
